Christmas Services in Belgium 2026: How to Find One Near You
Christmas Eve Mass, carol services and services in English, French or Dutch: how to find a Christmas service near you in Belgium, and what to expect.

Christmas is the one night of the year when many people who rarely go to church look for one. Maybe you've just moved to Belgium, maybe your family wants to keep a tradition, or maybe you simply want somewhere peaceful to be on Christmas Eve. This guide helps you find a Christmas service near you, in a language you understand, and know what to expect when you walk in.
When are Christmas services in Belgium?
Most churches hold their main celebrations on two days:
- Christmas Eve, 24 December. Many Catholic parishes celebrate a Mass in the late afternoon or early evening, often aimed at families, and some still hold a midnight Mass. Protestant and evangelical churches often have a candlelit service or a carol service that evening.
- Christmas Day, 25 December. Catholic parishes usually celebrate Mass in the morning. Some Protestant churches meet that morning too; others only on Christmas Eve or the Sunday before.
In the weeks before, many churches also hold carol services, Christmas concerts and children's nativity plays. These are often the easiest way to visit a church for the first time.
Times change every year and differ from the usual Sunday times, so always check the church's own website or social media in December.
Find a church in your language
Belgium is multilingual, and so are its churches. On ChurchedIn you can filter churches by the language of their services:
- English-speaking churches across Belgium, and specifically in the Brussels region. Our guide to English-speaking churches in Brussels explains the different kinds.
- Churches with services in French or Dutch.
- Smaller language communities too, such as Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, Polish, Romanian, Lingala and others.
Many Christmas services are bilingual, especially in Brussels. If you don't speak the local language, a carol service is a good choice: the songs are familiar and the Christmas story is the same in every language.
Find a church near you
On the ChurchedIn home page, type your town or commune, or use Near me to sort churches by distance. You can combine filters, for example a denomination and a language, and switch to the map to see what is within walking distance.
Each church page shows the address, the usual service times and a link to the church's own website, where you'll find the Christmas programme. Some churches also publish their Christmas services as events on their ChurchedIn page.
Catholic Christmas Masses
For Catholic parishes, the Belgian Mass-time websites list the Christmas Masses as they are announced: egliseinfo.be in French and kerknet.be in Dutch. Cathedrals and well-known basilicas fill up quickly on Christmas Eve, so come early or choose a smaller parish nearby.
What to expect at a Christmas service
- Arrive early. Christmas is the busiest service of the year. Aim to be there 15 to 20 minutes before the start.
- Dress as you like. Some people dress up for Christmas, but you're welcome as you are.
- Children are welcome. Many churches plan a family service on Christmas Eve, sometimes with a nativity play. Ask at the door if there's something for children.
- Bring a coat. Older church buildings can be cold in December.
- You don't need to know what to do. At a Mass or service you can simply sit, listen and stand when others stand. Nobody expects visitors to take part in Communion: if you're unsure, stay seated or come forward with your arms crossed for a blessing, where that is the custom.
- Plan your journey. Public transport often runs to a holiday timetable on 24 and 25 December, so check the times before you leave.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a midnight Mass in Belgium?
Some Catholic parishes still celebrate a Mass at or around midnight on Christmas Eve, but many now hold it earlier in the evening. Check egliseinfo.be or kerknet.be, or the parish's own website, for this year's times.
Can I go to a Christmas service if I'm not a member of the church?
Yes. Christmas services are open to everyone, and churches are glad to welcome visitors. You don't need to register for most services, although some churches ask people to sign up for a meal or a concert with limited places.
Are there Christmas services in English in Belgium?
Yes. Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, Leuven and other towns have English-speaking churches with Christmas services. Find them on ChurchedIn under English-speaking churches and check each church's website for its Christmas times.
When should I look for Christmas service times?
From late November. Most churches publish their Christmas programme in the first weeks of Advent, and the times are often different from the usual Sunday times.
Are you a church leader?
Make sure people can find your Christmas services: add them to your church page on ChurchedIn as events, with registration if places are limited, and update your Google listing with special hours for 24 and 25 December. Our guide to Christmas outreach for small churches has practical ideas, and My church is where you add your events. Not listed yet? Add your church for free.
